Before we get started I would like to make a note while I was doing the research for this blog, most of the articles I found on women DJs seemed to be more focused on how they looked rather than their talents as a DJ. And I just wanted to mention that because I found that aspect really sad. So lets get into women DJs and their talents at being DJs!
SPINDERELLA-REAL NAME DEIDRA ROPER
After learning DJ techniques from a DJ she was going out with, Spin started marketing herself as a DJ from the age of 16. In 1987 she became the third member of all female hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa when their first Spinderella didn’t work out. And the rest, as they say is history.
ALISON WONDERLAND-REAL NAME ALEXANDRA SHOLLER
Ms Sholler (or Wonderland take your pick!) started out her career remixing tracks for other people. But since 2013 has been doing mostly her own work including the songs I Want You and Run.
JUICY M-REAL NAME MARTA SWITKINA
This electro and progressive house music DJ comes from the Ukraine and began her DJing career at trendy nightclubs in Kiev. Ms Switkina has been named the best female DJ of The Year at the 2010 PRODD awards in the Ukraine and from 2011-2012 she did her first international gigs where she opened for the Black Eyed Peas and the Backstreet Boys to name a few. One of Ms Switkina’s DJing talents is she can mix four CD players without using headphones.
NIKI BELUCCI-REAL NAME NIKOLETTE POSAN
This Hungarian DJ has been around since 2003. Ms Belucci (or Posan again take your pick!) has been on a worldwide tour, released an album and singles and in 2010 was a resident DJ at a nightclub in Europe’s club capital of the world, Ibiza.
DJ COLETTE-REAL NAME COLETTE MARINO
Ms Marino is a resident house music DJ in her hometown of Chicago. She started her DJing career in the early ‘90s. In 1993 Ms Marino helped form the all girl DJ group SuperJane. She has also won the Best Breakthrough DJ award and has had her music used in commercials. Ms DJ Colette has also released albums and has performed all over the world.
ANNE SAVAGE
This hard dance DJ from the UK has been listed several times in DJ Magazine’s Worlds Top 100 DJs and had been the only female DJ listed in the Independent’s Top 10 Club DJs of Britain list.
LISA LASHES-REAL NAME LISA DAWN ROSE WYATT.
This electronic dance music DJ from England began her DJing career in 1992. Ms Lashes has been the headline act in European and international music festivals and has toured the world. Ms Lashes has often been voted by readers of DJ Magazine as one of the Top 100 most popular DJs on the magazine’s Top 100 list. Ms Lashes is also to date one of the first and only female DJs among the Top 10 DJs in the world. In 2010 Ms Lashes started introducing trance music into her DJ set and has also released albums and singles. In 2005 Ms Lashes launched her Lashed events, which started in Ibiza and soon became worldwide.
So seven lady DJs who have shown us that there is a lot more to being a DJ than looking pretty!
